New National Minimum Wage Rates

The new National Minimum Wage rates effective 1 October 2012 will be as follows:

  • £6.19 per hour for workers aged 21 and over – a rise of 11p
  • £4.98 per hour for 18-20 year olds – no change
  • £3.68 per hour for workers above school leaving age but under 18 – no change
  • £2.65 per hour for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship – a rise of 5p

Increase in Statutory Maternity Pay and Statutory Sick Pay rates

The following changes are effective April 2012:

1)      Changes to Maternity and Paternity Pay
Statutory  Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Pay will increase from £128.73 to £135.45 per week or 90% of normal weekly earnings if lower. Certain qualification criteria apply to the above payments. Contact me for more advice.

2)      Changes to Statutory Sick Pay
Statutory Sick Pay will increase to £85.85 per week. However, remember you will only need to pay Statutory Sick Pay to employees who qualify. Contact me for advice on the qualification requirements.

Annual increase in Employment Tribunal Awards

With effect from 1st February 2012, new limits on certain Employment Tribunal awards will rise in line with inflation. The two key changes are:

1)      An increase to the limit on the Compensatory Award for “Ordinary” Unfair Dismissals from £68,400 to £72,300

2)      An increase to the maximum amount on a week’s pay for the purposes of calculating Statutory Redundancy Payments from £400 to £430.
